The world has witnessed a shift in socio-economic relations and in the patterns and processes of industrialization and regional development. The paradigm of mass production has been replaced by radically new forms of organizing industrial production. The world’s map of industrial growth and competitiveness has been dramatically altered by these developments: managerial practices have been overturned in many places; the institutional arrangements between unions and firms have given way; and a series of concentrated new industrial core regions of the world centers of flexible, learning-based production have arisen. “Pathways to Industrialization and Regional Development” gathers the principal theoreticians concerned with these issues from a range of disciplines and countries in which these matters have most powerfully emerged. Focusing upon the interactions between economic logic and political institutions at both the local and global levels, the contributors map out the possible pathways to industrial and regional development in the 1990s.
