Modern Ireland is beset by economic, social, and environmental problems, in stark contrast with its promoted image as a land of rolling green pastures and a timeless way of life based on a self-sustaining rural economy. While many of Ireland’s problems are indigenous (the “troubles” of the North), others are part of general European and world trends. This contemporary study looks at these problems from geographic and environmental resource issues, placing them within their regional, national and international context. The volume covers a wide range of topics, such as population characteristics, crime, rural problems, to retailing tourism, regional development and environmental resource issues, including energy and water resource management.
