Description

Originally published in 1982 after much compulsive/obsessive research Hill End Gold was heralded at the time to be the most up to date paper on the history of Australian gold from all angles. In 1983 the N.S.W. State Libraries Service bulk purchased for distribution into its affiliates. Years later and more passionate came the book Hill End Hearsay which has added a human personal content to show how a goldfield evolves with a living breathing population born from gold seeking. My aim has been to clarify many myths and tell both sides of the story to get the time line correctly presented with a full complement of terms and conditions. Not just the highlights, the sensations, but to question and present all in a text with both books holding over 200K of words introducing many (until now) unpublished photos. This book has been used by many who have written similar since. Compiled at a time when leg work through original documents seemed endless and cross referenced to ensure creditability. This fine book represents a well researched historical guide to the people, places and mining methods of Hill End….. Ian Freeland District Inspector for Mines, Orange This is a well researched book which will be of great interest not only to the student, the tourist and the fossickers, but also to all those interested in Australian gold mining history. C. W. Marshall A.O. Mining Engineer Your efforts will help to put Hill End on the map again, of course what Hill End needs is a good shot in the arm with exploration money for further prospecting, and I trust this will be forthcoming in the near future. You have an understanding of the nitty-gritty of what goes on in a mining community and an appreciation of the mining technicalities, past and present.. (Professor/Geology), Sincerely Alan Jopling, April 29th 1983
